For many decades, the only real option for homeowners looking for a new water heater was to install a tank model. While tank water heaters are still quite popular, they are no longer the only option for providing a home with hot water. There are a variety of different water heater types available on the market. Before you decide on which one to install in your home, it’s a good idea to find out a bit more about them.
Tank Water Heaters
They may be an older technology, but they’re still just as popular as ever. Tank water heaters make use of a large storage tank to keep a standing supply of water heated at all times. This is very convenient, since you will pretty much always have hot water available. It’s also ideal for multi-person homes, since the system can provide enough hot water to meet the demands of several people at once. However, it is not the most energy efficient method for heating water. Much of the time, the system is spending fuel keeping water heated that you’re not actually using. That leads to higher costs on an annual basis.
Tankless Water Heaters
The tankless water heater attempts to mitigate some of the disadvantages of a tank water heater. Rather than dedicating space and energy to a storage tank, a tankless water heater uses a heat exchanger similar to a boiler. When there is a need for hot water, the tankless water heater activates and heats water as it flows through the pipe. The system remains in standby mode when not in use, making it more energy efficient than the tank model. However, tankless water heaters are more easily overwhelmed by demand from multiple sources. There is also a short delay between when a faucet is turned on and when hot water reaches it.
Hybrid Water Heaters
A hybrid water heater is a tank water heater with a few extra bells and whistles. An electric heating coil warms the water in the tank, but there is also a heat pump coil installed in it. The heat pump coil absorbs thermal energy from the air around the water heater, then releases it inside the tank. This enables it to garner a lot of the advantages of both tank and tankless water heaters. It has the convenience and storage capacity of a tank water heater, without wasting as much energy as a normal tank water heater would. This is one of the newer water heater technologies available on the market, but it’s already quite popular. If you’re still not sure which water heater is better for your home, don’t worry.
