What is Chromium–6
Chromium–6, also known as hexavalent chromium, is a naturally–occurring compound that appears in heavy amounts of certain industrial settings. It appears in dyes and paints and is often used to treat metal against corrosion. Unfortunately, it’s also toxic when ingested and has been connected to the development of cancer and other sickness in those who ingest it.
How Does It Get Into the Water?
Industrial runoff allows chromium–6 to leech into our water supply, and its appearance in the natural world can often affect the groundwater as well. The EPA is working to limit the appearance in chromium–6 ion the water, but clean–up efforts can be costly. Just because the government is slow to act, however, doesn’t mean you need to be.
How Much of a Danger Is It?
Sadly, here in Glendale, chromium–6 is still a significant concern. Here in Glendale, the wasters tested had amounts almost 400 times that of chromium–6 amounts in nearby states. Most of those high levels occur in groundwater, which doesn’t contribute to the water supply as much as surface water does. But with levels this high, taking a chance is simply not the game plan.
What Can Be Done?
The first step to addressing the issue is getting your home’s water supply tested for chromium–6. We can help on that front, since our team conducts testing services throughout the Glendale area. This is especially important if you live off the grid and/or get your home water form a private source such as a well.
Okay, We’ve Tested for It, Now What?
Assuming that chromium–6 appears in your water supply, the first step is to determine how prevalent it is and whether the issue will recur. In general, you should always assume that the problem will never be entirely gone once detected, and that your Glendale home needs to be safeguarded no matter what.
Reverse Osmosis Systems are the Key
In most cases, we recommend installing a reverse osmosis system in your home to deal with cases of chromium–6. The process strains the harsh chemical out of your water supply, leaving it clean and healthy for you to drink or cook with. We can explain the process to you before performing the installation, then be there with regular cleaning and maintenance services throughout its life.
